Privacy Policy

The Surf Shop (“we,” “us,” or “our”) runs an AI-powered surf-shopping assistant at thesurfshop.ai. This policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, and who helps us process it. It applies to the beta version of the service.

Information we collect

• Email address: used for our waitlist and for account sign-in and authentication.
• Account credentials: managed through our authentication provider so you can sign in securely.
• Chat messages: the messages you send to the assistant are processed to generate product recommendations.
• Shopping preferences, budget, and your stash: your saved items, preferences, and budget are stored in your browser’s local storage and, when you are signed in, associated with your account.
• Subscription and billing status: whether you have a Pro subscription and its status, so we can provide the features you have paid for.

How we use your information

We use the information above to operate the service: to sign you in, generate recommendations from your chat messages, remember your preferences and stash, process your Pro subscription, and improve and secure the product. We do not use your data for purposes you would not reasonably expect from a surf-shopping assistant.

We do not sell your personal information.

Who processes your data

We rely on a small set of trusted service providers (“subprocessors”) to run the service. Each handles data only as needed to provide its part of the product, under its own privacy policy:

• Anthropic (Claude API)

  Generates the AI assistant's responses from the messages you send in the chat.

• Supabase

  Database, authentication, and hosting for your account data.

• Stripe

  Processes Pro subscription payments. Your card details go directly to Stripe. We never see or store full card numbers.

• PostHog

  Privacy-conscious product analytics. For the beta we have disabled session replay and autocapture; we record only specific product events (for example, a recommendation being shown or an item being saved to your stash), not your keystrokes or your screen.

• Vercel

  Application hosting and content delivery (CDN).

Shopping and checkout

The Surf Shop recommends products from independent surf brands’ own online stores. When you choose to buy something, we hand you off to the brand’s own website to complete checkout.

The Surf Shop is not the seller or merchant of record for those products. We do not process product payments, and we do not fulfill or ship orders. The brand does. Once you reach a brand’s site, that brand’s terms and privacy practices apply to your purchase.

Analytics in the beta

For the beta we have intentionally limited what we measure. In PostHog we have disabled session replay and autocapture, so we do not record your screen or your keystrokes. We capture only specific product events (for example, a recommendation being shown or an item being saved to your stash).

Cookies and local storage

We use cookies and your browser’s local storage to keep you signed in and to remember your cart and preferences, along with the product analytics described above. You can clear this data through your browser at any time, though doing so may sign you out and reset your saved preferences and stash.

Your choices and rights

You can request access to your data, request deletion of your data, or delete your account at any time by emailing us at hello@thesurfshop.ai. We will respond within a reasonable time and in line with applicable law.

Children’s privacy

The Surf Shop is not directed to children. You must be at least 13 years old to use the service (and at least 16 if you are in the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom). We do not knowingly collect personal information from anyone below these ages.

Changes to this policy

As the product evolves out of beta, we may update this policy. When we make material changes, we will update the effective date above and, where appropriate, notify you in the app.
